The stream anchor

To build the stream anchor, I began by cutting out the arms from 3mm (0.11 in) styrene with a belt saw, cleaned it up and rounded the edges with a file. The flukes, which were made from thinner styrene and sanded to a conical shape, were attached to the arms. The shank was made from 4mm (0.15in) styrene and two strengthening plates were added to the sides of the crown. This formed a fork which held the arms. The stock was made from styrene rod which was sanded to a conical shape with a disc sander set at the slowest speed to prevent the material from melting during the process. Both halves were made separately and joined to two small thick discs forming the bands which were also joined to a small piece of rod forming the centre. The openings for the ring and the stock at the end of the shank were cut from rod and attached to the shank. The joints of these were given a generous filling of putty and filed to shape after the putty had hardened. The ring was cut from styrene, the edges rounded with a file and formed around a wooden dowel. Straps and gravity bands were added from strip and sprue.
